Does oral medication help us in curing toenail fungus?
If our toenail was infected by fungi, we sometimes take some oral medicine to get rid of this infection diseases. But, does oral medication really help us in curing nail fungus?
Recent article show that daily lamisil for 7 days every 3-month treatment was very effective in treating nail fungus. Ernst Epstein, MD, helps us in making the decision to choose a suitable treatment for fungal infections that often attack both toenail and fingernail. He analyze some studies on oral treatment of toenail fungus. He read article that described results in toenail, used both culture and microscopy for diagnosing nail fungus, and also included clinical evaluation for effectiveness of treatment.
To make a valuable analysis about study on effectiveness of nail fungus oral treatment, he did not include case report, studies involving fewer than 15 subjects and reports that combined fingernail and toenail fungus in their studies. He also did not include studies reporting only the total number of toenails cured without providing data as to how many subjects were cured. Thus, he found 26 articles that deserve to be analyzed.
In analyzing oral medication for nail fungus, Ernst Epstein used a checklist that contains the normal toenail description, findings in the examination of fungi and some statistical data such as recurrence rate.
The results of the analysis made by Ernst Epstein was not much different from some previous findings. In getting rid of toenail fungus, lamisil still superior than sporanox. Approximately 35% to 50% of patients using lamisil can be free of fungal toenail infection. Meanwhile, sporanox only cure 25% to 40% of patients who suffer from fungal infections on toenails. With cure rate up to 50%, I think oral lamisil can help us in curing nail fungus infections.
