Some researchers from Hospital Clinic Barcelona examined combination of oral medications using sporanox and topical treatment using Loceryl (amorolfine) for treating nail fungus. Fungal infections of the toenail is a rather difficult disease to treat. Several oral medications have been proven to rid of toenail fungus effectively. However, this pill will circulate in the blood and spread throughout the body so that side effects of these drugs would be dangerous in certain patient conditions. Therefore, some researchers from Spain compare the effects of the combination between amorolfine and sporanox.

In a study involving 131 patients, the researchers divided the subjects into two random groups. The first group getting combination therapy using loceryl nail lacquer (amorolfine 5%) once a week for 24 weeks and 200 mg sporanox taken once daily for 6 weeks. The second group of single-use sporanox therapy for 12 weeks. Then, at week 12 and 24, researchers examined the patients with microscopic examination and fungal culture from nail.

Examination at week 12 has shown that combination therapy is more effective than single therapy. Approximately 93% of patients with combination therapy has been cured from toenail fungus at week 12. In the group given a single therapy, only 82.9% of patients healed at week 12. At week 24, the cure rate in patients given combination therapy sporanox and loceryl also higher compared with patients given a single therapy sporanox. Previous research has also shown that combination therapy is better than single therapy.?
