Essential oils extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia plants, has been clinically proven to cure onychomycosis. Some doctors from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Highland Hospital, New York has proven that the effectiveness of tea tree oil in curing toenail fungus is equivalent to the effectiveness of clotrimazole.

Research conducted at several medical centers, is designed to compare the effectiveness of topical treatment of toenail fungus clotrimazole 1% solution with a solution of 100% tea tree oil. Topical treatment was done twice daily for 6 months. Topical treatment was combined with surgical debridement on the first visit and visits in the first month, third month and sixth month. Clinical assessment was also conducted in the first month, third month and sixth month to see the success of therapy. Then, cultures were obtained at the sixth month to see microbiological cure. The opinion of patients about the progress of treatment toenail fungus also asked at 3 months after end of therapy. How do these findings? In the sixth month, judging from the recovery in culture, the number of patients who use tea tree oil healed more compared with clotrimazole, which is 18% vs. 11%.
