A BMJ journal show that fungus infections on toenails are most commonly caused by anthropophilic fungi called dermatophytes, especially from genus Trichophyton, Epidermophyton, and Microsporum. Three most common species causing toenail fungus infection are T rubrum, T mentagrophytes var interdigitale, and E floccosum. T rubrum is now believed as the most common cause of toenail fungus infection worldwide.
